The residents of a North Memphis community have called the city multiple times. They have been asking for help as they face problems due to an abandoned apartment community nearby.
Abandoned Property
A blighted property near University Street and Hubert Avenue has been causing problems for a North Memphis community just beyond the Vollintine-Evergreen neighborhood. According to Denise Cavette, the HOA president of the Hubert Homeowners Association, the apartment community behind her home was once peaceful. She has lived there for 46 years but no longer comes into her backyard.
The abandoned property is causing several environmental issues. Residents have faced problems with snakes, fires, and illegal dumping of tires and garbage. The apartment now looks like a trash dump. Moreover, the overgrown vines have damaged several fences in the neighborhood.
North Memphis Community Asks for Help
The homeowners in the plagued neighborhood have been calling the city for help. However, despite repeated attempts, the city has offered little to no help. Cavett wants all the people she voted for to come out and hear their stories. They wanted code enforcement, but the city officials did not come.
According to Cavett, the city did trim the grass but left the overgrown vines hanging. Moreover, the Tax Assessor’s office stated that someone bought the abandoned property in February 2020. A news outlet attempted to reach out to the buyer to ask about plans for the property. They did not respond.
Meanwhile, the news outlet asked the City of Memphis if the abandoned property had any prior code violations. They also asked when was the last time code enforcement visited the area. However, the city has yet to respond. Now the neighbors of the North Memphis community are just hoping the city will force the owner to clean up the abandoned apartment.
