Residents of a neighborhood near the Maple Heights/Garfield Heights border express frustration over communication issues with the Maple Heights HOA. However, the association’s management claims that their actions aim to maintain neighborhood standards.
Maple Heights HOA Grapples With Communication Issues
Resident Robert Johnson says homeowners in the neighborhood take pride in their properties, so they don’t need threats to keep things in order. “I didn’t think it was necessary to come around and threaten people about getting little, small things fixed,” said Johnson.
Residents of Valley Ranch Estates, located along the Maple Heights/Garfield Heights boundary, report inconsistent communication, a lack of meetings, and aggressive enforcement of policies by the HOA.
“That is the biggest concern, which is the lack of communication with the homeowners association,” said Kama Ricks. “It mentioned our roof; it was completed on May 24th, and the date on the letter was July 30th; it didn’t make sense to us.”
Ricks, who lives with her mother, added that many neighbors are frustrated by letters citing outdated information and demanding corrections within 20 days.
She also noted that the last HOA meeting minutes posted were from 2022. Emails have also gone unanswered.
Given the neighborhood’s history of responsible upkeep, Johnson emphasized the need for more dialogue regarding home maintenance.
“We take care of our property; we don’t have to be threatened with a fine,” Johnson said.
Management Response
The Maple Heights HOA management stated that the letters are intended to bring potential issues to homeowners’ attention and that several notices are sent before any fines are imposed.
Management also mentioned that an annual meeting was held last October and that homeowners can contact their office with any concerns.
Barnett Management continued to defend the notices, emphasizing its role in ensuring that the neighborhood meets its expected standards.
However, residents argue that the community’s upkeep is driven by personal pride, not by pressure from the HOA.
