This area used to be a major hunting area for the Tuscarora Indians that lived in this area. There were fresh water springs for which the area got its’ name. The sawmill and cotton gin were major economic assistances to the area. There were churches, stores, schools, and lodges that started to develop the town as well.
During the Civil War, it became a ghost town. Many thieves came and raided the town. The economic hardship the area endured due to this was fatal for the time the city had been previously doing well. There also was not railway that had the appeal of other cities.
In the late 1800’s there was an economic increase due to a man names George Alford. He started businesses, a sawmill, cotton gin, a newspaper and incorporated the Railway which became the Durham and Southern Railway. Holly Springs continued to waver in its steady populous due to another war and other detrimental aspects.
The sewage plant that was built in 1987 is what really has given this small town the stability it needed to succeed.
