A woman and her pet cat escaped a fire at Franklin Condominium. She was not injured, and the Franklin Fire Department was dispatched a little before 7:00 p.m. However, the estimated cost of damages is at $10,000.
Fire at Franklin Condo
The Franklin Fire Department (FFD) was dispatched before 7:00 p.m. to put out a fire at a single-story, two-unit condominium on Morrissey Street. They arrived less than four minutes later at the Reid Hill Commons condo. However, the damage had been done, as the firefighters found flames and heavy black smoke coming from an open garage door. The firefighters extinguished the fire quickly, preventing it from spreading to the adjoining unit or residence.
According to FFD’s investigator, Brian Daugherty, the fire began at the home’s attached garage. The electric range was plugged in at the garage, which the woman accidentally turned on by bumping into a knob. As a result, the plastic tote on top of the electric range ignited and caused the fire. The woman was at home when the fire began. She heard a popping noise inside the garage. Upon opening the door to investigate the sound, she found the fire, called 911, and evacuated the condo.
However, when she exited the building, the woman left the door to her home and the garage door open. The fire at Franklin City caused no injuries. Nonetheless, the smoke spread inside the home because of the open doors. According to Daugherty, the estimated damages would cost $10,000.
Reminder from FFD
The Franklin Fire Department reminds the city’s residents that closing doors can prevent heat, smoke, and fire from spreading into a room and reduce the level of carbon monoxide in the property. Remember to close bedroom doors before sleeping and close any doors behind you when escaping a fire. Moreover, if residents cannot escape the property, they should get behind a closed door and dial 911.
