Dockside evacuees granted access to collect personal items left behind after the February evacuation. This comes months after safety concerns forced residents out with only 48 hours’ notice.
Dockside Evacuees Granted Access Under Strict Safety Plan
The City of Charleston and the Dockside Association approved a plan to allow residents limited entry. The evacuation occurred after officials determined the building was not structurally safe for continued occupation.
Residents were not allowed to take large belongings during the initial evacuation. Now, a coordinated process will let them enter and move out items.
According to the plan, each unit has been given a designated day. Four units will be scheduled at a time, starting from the top floor. Two units will be granted time to pack belongings. The other two will move their items out on the same day. This rotation is expected to continue for about 11 weeks.
To access the building, residents and hired movers must sign a waiver. This legal document acknowledges the potential risks involved in reentering the unstable structure.
