Reston EV chargers mark a major milestone in Fairfax County’s program to promote electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure in residential communities. Harpers Square and other neighborhoods have successfully added communal EV charging stations under the county’s Charge Up Fairfax initiative.
Reston EV Chargers Lead Charge Up Fairfax Program
The Harpers Square cluster in Reston celebrated the installation of its first EV chargers as part of the Charge Up Fairfax program. This initiative provides technical and financial assistance to communities interested in adding EV charging stations in common areas. Harpers Square was the first to complete the process, followed by the Penderbrook Community Association.
The program, launched to support sustainable transportation, covers feasibility assessments and engineering site visits. Communities also receive partial reimbursement for installation costs, up to $12,000 in some cases. Associations are responsible for hiring contractors, obtaining permits, and ensuring the required power infrastructure is in place.
Growing Participation in EV Charger Program
Since its pilot launch in 2023, Charge Up Fairfax has expanded to 20 communities. Recent participants include the Midtown North Condominium in Reston and the Encore Condominium in Tysons. Both will receive financial assistance for EV infrastructure improvements. Other new additions, like the Lakepointe Community Council in Burke, will get technical and financial support.
Fairfax County’s program aligns with its goal of having 15% of registered light vehicles be electric or hybrid by 2030. By fostering EV charger access, the county aims to reduce emissions and promote sustainable living in residential areas.
