The Donelson HOA board in Harborview is pushing to install license plate readers (LPRs) to monitor vehicle activity and help deter crime in the neighborhood. However, the plan has sparked a mix of support and concern among residents.
Privacy Concerns Raised by Donelson HOA Board Proposal
Several Harborview homeowners have expressed unease over potential privacy issues with the cameras. While some residents, like Augustine Chiper, feel the LPRs may invade their privacy, others, including Molly Moore, believe they are essential for neighborhood safety. Moore voiced strong support for the LPRs after a recent shooting incident in the area, saying it made her and her husband feel more secure knowing that action was being taken.
HOA Discusses Funding and Community Input
During a virtual HOA board meeting, members explained that funding for the LPRs would come from existing monthly HOA fees, with no additional charges for residents. They also assured homeowners that those uncomfortable with the system could opt out of having their plates recorded. However, some members argued that the funds could be allocated to other neighborhood improvements.
The HOA board has opened an online voting portal where residents can vote on the LPR proposal. If the measure is approved, installing LPRs could begin as early as November.
Voting closes on Wednesday.
