Families of the Raleigh mass shooting victims filed a lawsuit on Friday. The shooting took place in the Hedingham neighborhood. The lawsuit targets several parties. These include Austin Thompson, his parents, the Hedingham Community Association, and Capitol Special Police LLC.
Raleigh Mass Shooting Prompts Legal Action
According to authorities, Austin Thompson shot and killed five people on October 13, 2022. The shooting occurred in the northeast Raleigh neighborhood of Hedingham.
Now, the victims’ families are suing the shooter’s father as well as the Hedingham Community Association, among others. The lawsuit claims Thompson was a known threat before the incident. Despite this, he was allowed to move freely with his weapons.
According to the Howard Stallings Law Firm, this negligence led to the deaths of five individuals and injuries to others.
The lawsuit highlights complaints made against Austin Thompson before the tragedy. Residents reported disturbing behavior, including racial slurs and confrontations.
One of the victims, Nicole Connors Howard, had conflicts with the Thompson family. She was shot 35 times during the incident.
Alan Thompson, Austin’s father, pleaded guilty to improperly storing a firearm. A trial for Austin Thompson is expected in September 2025.
