The crime of burglary is always a possibility for any homeowner, but usually the chances of one happening can be controlled. Charlotte homeowners associations are taking extra measures to prevent burglar activities in their communities by employing these few measures:
Often, burglars will look for the path of least resistance. Installing an alarm system is a good deterrent because criminals will avoid anything that attracts more attention. An alarm system may seem expensive, but it doesn’t have to be. You can use something as simple as a battery-powered system that attaches to a door or window and that goes off when opened.
Don’t stop there, though. Encourage residents to set up a visible sign saying that the home has an alarm system. A reminder alone is often enough to make burglars think twice.
Hiding Expensive Items
As much as a resident is proud of those valuable items that might make a home personal, it’s a bad idea to display them in a place that’s easily viewed from outside. Burglars often consider stealing from a place that has noticeably expensive items inside.
Obviously, a home is easier to break into when there is no one home, so it’s important for residents to give the illusion of being home even when they aren’t. The best way to do so is by having inside lights on at night. Most burglars are only interested in stealing items — as opposed to also committing harmful crimes against the people inside — so they are much less likely to attempt theft when someone appears to be home.
This may sound like a given, but it’s easy to assume a neighborhood is safe and become lax about open doors and windows… which burglars then use to their advantage. Of course they would much rather get into a home where doors or windows are unlocked. And even worse, there’s the possibility of the thief avoiding breaking and entering charges, if the door or window was unlocked when they committed the thievery.
