HOA & Community Management Company Orangeburg, South Carolina
If you come to Orangeburg, South Carolina, on a May morning, you will smell the scent of roses hanging over the city. The delightful aroma is coming from the nearly 5,000 rose plants that adorn the famous Edisto Memorial Gardens at the heart of the city. Originally the gardens were 5 acres of azaleas planted by Andrew Dibble, but now over 120 different rose varieties stand alongside the azaleas. Hundreds of people will gather during this time to celebrate the Orangeburg Festival of Roses that takes place every year just before Mother’s Day.
The city of Orangeburg is steeped in history. The Edisto Memorial Gardens are built over the site where the Union Army stopped for a short time in 1865 just two months before the end of the Civil War. The gardens now memorialize not only the brave Orangeburg soldiers who fought during this war, but also those of WWI, WWII, the Korean War, and Vietnam.
The city saw its first settlers from Europe in 1704, but didn’t have a name until 30 years later. The town was named after Prince William IV of Orange, and attracted trappers, hunters, and farmers because of the rich ground, consistent rainfall, and the presence of wild animals. Later on, the area became a hub of cotton growing.
In the mid 1900s, with two predominantly black colleges in the area, the city was a leader in the Civil Rights Movement. Orangeburg saw its share of tragedy because of its attempts to end segregation and racial injustice, but now leads the country in graduating black students with prestigious degrees from these two colleges.
The present town has plenty to offer both residents and visitors. Such points of interest as the old county jail (dubbed the “pink palace”), the old post office, and the Moseley House will draw those interested in history. However, for a lot of people, Orangeburg is simply a place called “home.” The lively atmosphere that comes from being a college town, as well as the miles of beautiful waterways like the famous Edisto river, and lush foliage, memorials, and parks draw many people to live in this area of South Carolina. But perhaps the thing that keeps most people here is the sense of community and neighborliness that many experience.
